FG Reportedly Declines Sponsorship for 15-Year-Old SAT Prodigy Qualified for China Maths Olympiad
The Federal Government has reportedly declined to sponsor 15-year-old Agbo Adoga, a Nigerian student who achieved a perfect SAT score and earned the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the International Mathematics Olympiad in China.
According to education advocate Alex Onyia, Graceland International School in Port Harcourt, where Agbo studies, revealed that the Ministry of Education stated it had no funds available to sponsor participants for the competition.
Missed Opportunity for Nigeria
Onyia expressed disappointment over the development, describing it as yet another missed chance for Nigeria to showcase its young academic talent on the international stage. He also explained that private sponsorship was not permitted, as Agbo would officially represent Nigeria at the event.
Despite the willingness of Agboâs parents to fund the trip, they were reportedly unable to proceed due to government regulations.
Alex Onyia wrote on social media:
"Graceland International School, Port Harcourt just informed me that Agbo Adoga qualified to represent Nigeria in the International Maths Olympiad in China. Nigerian Ministry of Education said they donât have money to sponsor anybody. So he will not attend. Nigeria lost again!"
When asked if individual contributions could be made, Onyia added:
"Unfortunately, it must come from the Federal Ministry of Education. He will be flying the Nigerian flag at the global stage alongside students from all other countries in the world. Individual sponsorship is not allowed. The parents would have happily done that."
