Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a major setback following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against South Africa on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles arrived in Bloemfontein on the back of a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda, but knew only a win against Bafana Bafana would keep their qualification dream alive.

South Africa struck first in the opening half when Nigerian captain William Troost-Ekong unfortunately turned the ball into his own net. However, Nigeria responded swiftly as Calvin Bassey powered home a header to level the score before halftime.

Despite a spirited display from both sides, neither team could find a breakthrough after the interval, and the contest ended with the points shared.

The draw leaves South Africa top of the group on 17 points, six clear of second-placed Nigeria with just two games remaining. Benin Republic, meanwhile, could shake up the standings if they manage to secure a result against Lesotho.
